Estimated GFR will usually be sufficient to
provide a useful ‘ballpark’ value for the GFR. The most widely used method for
estimating GFR is the Cockcroft-Gault equation. This equation considers the
effects of age, sex and body weight on creatinine generation, thereby adjusting
serum creatinine values to more accurately reflect creatinine clearance.

= [(140 – age) X body weight (kg) X 0.85 if female ] divided by [72 X serum
creatinine (mg/dl)]
